Librarians as Social Justice Advocates

Kaitlyn Griffith | LAS Seminars | Guillermina Duarte

Abstract

Library professionals facilitate the free flow of information in order for their patrons to fully engage in the learning process. Some view this professional responsibility as reason for librarians to remain neutral or even silent on political issues, and might go so far as to place this role in opposition to social justice advocacy. In actuality, advocating for social justice and connecting patrons to resources without judgement or interrogation have historically overlapped frequently in the library science field, and they continue to today.
