Internship at the League of United Latin American Citizens

Laura Shaw | Political Science | Patrick Homan
Honors Project, ExcEL Scholar

Abstract

During the Spring semester of 2020, I had the opportunity to intern with the League of United Latin American Citizens in Washington D.C. As the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States, LULAC advocates for the social, economic, and political rights of Latin American people through community-based organizing. Although my coursework at Dominican prepared me for the substantive work I completed at LULAC, nothing could have prepared me for the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, politics under the pandemic, and the transition to remote working/learning. In this presentation, I will discuss my time in the office and working from home with LULAC, my experience in D.C., and the professional skills I developed from this experience. It is also critical that I address the opportunities that helped me succeed in this internship, specifically the EXCEL scholarship. Not only did this experience further developed my professional skills, but it also shaped my view of civic engagement and my role in creating a just and humane world.
