From time to time, you may need to update/replace a video while preserving the URL of the original. Reasons for this might include the original video having previously been shared or published in other locations such as web pages. To avoid the need to go to each of these locations to update the URL to point to the new session, it is possible to merge the new recording into the original Panopto session, thereby allowing the new version of the recording to retain the original’s URL.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This process will delete the previous streams contained in the original session. If you wish to retain the original recordings for archival purposes, be certain to make a copy of the original session before performing the merge operation.

Before you begin, note the location of the two recordings that will be merged. Obviously, it is preferable to have them reside in the same directory, but be sure that they have different names; this will make it easier to distinguish them from one another when performing the merge.

Open the Settings panel for the “new” session and go to the “Manage” category.
Under “Merge into another session”, use the directory drop down menu to locate the directory that contains the original session (the session who’s URL we wish to preserve).
After the directory has been selected, the drop-down menu immediately beneath the directory drop-down menu will contain the list of al available sessions.
Select the original session and then click “Merge”.
The merge operation will cause the original session to begin to reprocess
Go to the original session, open the Settings panel and select “Streams”
You will see a list of the streams contained within the session.
The original streams will have a start time of “00:00” (video, audio, slides and screen captures occupy their own streams within a Panopto session). You will be deleting the respective streams with the “00:00” start times.
Moving your cursor over a stream’s title will reveal a deletion icon on the right-hand side of the column. Click the “x” for each stream to be removed.
You can now close the settings panel as the updated session reprocesses.
