3.5 Using Panopto with PowerPoint or Keynote (Mac)
This tutorial will demonstrate how to record a PowerPoint presentation using the Panopto Desktop Recorder software.
Before making a recording, be sure to have the Panopto Recorder installed on the computer that you will be using. For instructions on that, see "Downloading and Installing Panopto Recorder (PC)" or "Downloading and Installing Panopto Recorder (Mac)".
- Use your web browser to launch the Panopto Recorder from one of the following three (3) locations:
- The Course Video section of your Canvas course.
- The Panopto web portal (https://dominican.hosted.panopto.com Links to an external site.)
- The Canvas Assignment or Discussion that will receive the finished recording. (Recommended for advanced users)
- Using your web browser to open Panopto Recorder - rather than launching the app independently from your desktop - will ensure that the Panopto Recorder is properly connected to the web when it starts.
- If this is the first time that you’ve used the Panopto Recorder, be sure that you have completed the tutorial on making a basic recording with Panopto before proceeding.
- Confirm that your camera and microphone are properly configured. If you wish to simply record a voiceover narration to your slide presentation, select “None” for Video in the “Primary Sources” settings for the recorder.
- Under “Slides”, check the box for “Record PowerPoint”. Panopto will now capture your slideshow as you record.
(Keynote users: select "Record Keynote").
- If your slide presentation includes motion (such as slide animations or video) or you plan to show content outside of PowerPoint during presentation (such as a web site), select "Built-in Display" under "Secondary Sources".
- Open on PowerPoint and select your presentation.
- Now that you’ve configured the Panopto Recorder and selected your PowerPoint presentation, you are ready to begin recording your session.
- Return to Panopto and press the record button to begin recording.
- Alternatively, you can press Command+Option+R on your keyboard. - Navigate back to PowerPoint and begin your slideshow.
- Your slideshow will run in fullscreen, with Panopto recording in the background.
- When you are finished presenting, you can stop the recording in one of two ways:
- Press the Command-Option-R keys on your keyboard (recommended).
- Exit the PowerPoint presentation, navigate to Panopto and press “Stop”.
Suggestions
- If you make a mistake while recording, you do not have stop and then rerecord your recording all over again!
Instead, pause from speaking for a moment and then resume speaking from a point before you made the mistake, such as a previous sentence. Afterwards, you can use the Panopto editor to remove the portion containing the mistake. This is particularly useful if the mistake occurred more than a few minutes into your presentation. - Your uploaded session may include a few moments before and after you have started your presentation. To give your session a finished look, use the Panopto editor to remove unwanted portions at the beginning and/or end of your session.
